James Shannon
Captain James Shannon began his law enforcement career with the Department of Defense Police in 1995 assigned to patrol. He joined the San Francisco Sheriff's Office in 1996. Captain Shannon was first promoted to the rank of Senior Deputy Sheriff in 2001, Sheriff's Lieutenant in 2011, and Sheriff's Captain in 2024.
Captain Shannon has worked a variety of assignments throughout the course of his career to include linear and direct supervision jails, the Backgrounds Investigation Unit, the Central Warrant Bureau, and the Sheriff's Patrol Unit. Captain Shannon has been a member of the Emergency Services Unit since 2005 and served on the Special Response Team from 2006 until 2018. Additionally, he served as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal as part of the Pacific Southwest Fugitive Task Force.
Captain Shannon was raised in Lane County, Oregon, spending his summers working on farms. He earned a Bachelors of Science in Management from California Coast University.
Captain Shannon is married with three adult children. In his spare time, he is a competitive powerlifter. Over the course of his powerlifting career, he has won numerous powerlifting events including three United States Powerlifting Association National Championships, an International Powerlifting League North American Championship, and two International Powerlifting League World Championships.
