Dr. Tyler Mains, Director of Jail Health Services

Dr. Tyler Mains is the new Director of Jail Health Services at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He most recently served as JHS's Chief Medical Officer before stepping into his current leadership role.

Dr. Mains brings an uncommon breadth of experience to his work. Before becoming a physician, he was a high school biology teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools and, earlier in his career, an actor — experiences that continue to shape how he leads. He completed his medical training at Johns Hopkins and UCSF, specializing in Internal Medicine, Primary Care, and Addiction Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mains has been committed to serving those who are most underestimated — from inner city public school students to people struggling with homelessness and substance use disorders. He joined Jail Health Services with a passion for caring for society's most unseen populations, and he takes seriously the unique opportunity that JHS and SFSO have to support people on a journey to stability and recovery.

Dr. Mains also founded a nonprofit that mentors Baltimore students interested in health careers — many of whom are now physicians and healthcare professionals. He continues to teach medical students, residents, and fellows about the work of caring for people in the jails.

Outside of work, Dr. Mains enjoys beach volleyball, going to the theater, and exploring coffee shops and hiking trails. He is also passionate about photography and finding ways to appreciate the beauty of everyday moments.
